Do Sunscreen Pills Work?

Sunscreen pills are a relatively new product in the market that claims to protect against the harmful effects of the sun's UV rays. These pills contain ingredients that are said to increase the skin's resistance to sunburn, reduce the risk of skin cancer, and prevent premature ageing. However, the efficacy of sunscreen pills has been a topic of debate among dermatologists and researchers.

Sunscreen pills contain various ingredients such as Polypodium leucotomos extract, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and other antioxidants. These ingredients are believed to protect against sun damage by neutralizing the free radicals that are produced by exposure to UV radiation. However, it is important to note that these ingredients have not been specifically studied for their effectiveness as a sunscreen.

One reason why sunscreen pills may not be as effective as traditional sunscreens is that they do not provide a physical barrier between the skin and the sun. Traditional sunscreens work by blocking or absorbing UV radiation, while sunscreen pills claim to work by increasing the skin's natural resistance to sunburn. However, there is no evidence to suggest that this increased resistance translates to actual protection against UV radiation.

Another issue with sunscreen pills is that they are not properly regulated. This means that there is no way to know for sure what ingredients are actually in the pills and whether they are safe to consume. Some sunscreen pills have been found to contain harmful ingredients, such as high levels of zinc, which can cause gastrointestinal problems.

In conclusion, sunscreen pills are not an effective means of sun protection.  While they may contain ingredients that have antioxidant properties, there is no evidence to suggest that they provide actual protection against UV radiation. It is beneficial to consume foods that are rich in anti -oxidants bit they cannot replace the protection physical sun screen provides.

Traditional sunscreens that are applied topically to the skin are still the most effective means of sun protection. It is important to apply sunscreen liberally and frequently when spending time outdoors, and to take other measures to protect the skin, such as wearing protective clothing and seeking shade during peak sun hours.
