One thing that you will need to do in every skincare routine is layer products. Simple or complicated your routine has to have order. What serum comes first? Does moisturizer come after face oil? Lesley Bowen, a medical aesthetician and skin care therapist aesthetician answers it all in the second episode of Know Your Skin With SERUMIZE.
How Do You Determine What Goes On First
A basic skincare routine should have four products; a cleanser, a serum, a moisturizer, and sunscreen. The products should be applied in that order. The order in which you apply your skincare is determined by molecular weight. In simple terms, the products with lighter products are applied before the heavier ones.
Quick Layering Shorthand
- Multiple serums should be applied in the order of thickness.
- Water-based serums should come before oil-based serums. Oil-based serums will repel water-based serums if applied before them.
- Toner should come immediately after cleansing as it is the lightest step as it helps to restore the optimal PH of the skin.
- Actives (Retinoids, AHAs and BHAs) are best used at night. However, actives such as the Clear Fight Serum can be used during the day if you are sun conscious and diligent with sunscreen application.
